Canon ZR950
$279.00
Released January, 2008
The Pros:Affordable. 37x optical zoom. Can record still shots to SDHC cards.
The Cons:Records to MiniDV tapes. Does not record in high definition. Poor video quality compared to similarly priced competitors.
The Canon ZR950 is an entry-level miniDV-based ultra compact camcorder. Retailing at just $279, this piece is very cheap if compared to the other ultra-compact camcorders in the market. It has a good 37x zoom (its advanced zoom goes up to 48x), which is above average, has manual focus with impressive quality, and weights just 13.4 ounces.

It must be noted that this piece has a 1.07 CCD image sensor and has the interesting feature of multi-angle remote: which means it can be controlled by the remote from any angle. The primary difference between this one and the $10 cheaper Canon ZR930 is that it has an SDHC slot for stills and a USB 2.0 port for connecting to PictBridge printers.
