Canon VIXIA HF S20
$700.00
Released January, 2010
The Pros:Full auto mode comes through very clear and sharp, don't have to play with settings. Gets rich colors that still look fairly natural. Auto focus does a great job finding the subject right away.
The Cons:Battery performance is poor, often can't get a full hour from it.
Canon's VIXIA HF S20 is a higher-end HD camcorder with internal flash memory and 2 slots for SDHC cards. This model has a real-time autofocus system that uses an external sensor to improve focus accuracy especially in low-light conditions or tracking moving subjects.

Its side display is also a touch panel with high resolution, and a touch-focus feature that focuses and tracks subjects when touched. With an optional Canon microphone attachment, this camera can record audio in 5.1 surround sound for playback on home theatre systems. It can shoot still images at 8.0 megapixels, as well as "video snapshots" for short periods of time, and has three selectable framerates for film, cinema, or frame modes. The HD lens records in 1920 x 1080p for full HD playback, and has a 10x optical zoom with optical image stabilization to retain quality and reduce image shake. The HF S30 is a functionally similar model with two upgrades, an EVF and compatibility with SDXC cards to record more video.
